Playing with Dolls

Joss Whedon\'s DollhouseJoss Whedon Is Playing With Dolls. A good thing, no? Okay we’ve been hearing all over the interweb about Joss Whedon’s new endeavor. It’s been one of many such “endeavors” that’s been reported he’s had his hands in. Chief among them being: Goners, a supernatural thriller about dead people, a Serenity sequel, which it looks like isn’t happening now, and (of course) Dollhouse, which FOX has already picked up for a full seven episodes “sight unseen”, meaning there has been no formal pilot announced.

The Trailer which sold me on this show featured the clever catch phrases:

“Did I fall asleep?”
“For a little while.”

To see the trailer and be brainwashed to love all things Whedon (as if you needed an incentive to love his work) it’s located over at Screenrant.com.

OVERVIEW: A group, no indication of whether its government or corporate (like there’s a difference - right?), hires out — pimps really — young people for various tasks. Everything from being glorified bodyguards to being high priced escorts. The catch is, they are programmed in a very Matrix-esque manner with entire lives, memories, and experiences, even going so far as imprinting muscle memory (i.e., the gal from HEROES who can replicate any action she sees).

THE PLOT: Echo (Dushku) and two other “Actives” start a trend that the agency’s head finds “spectacularly unacceptable”. The trio begins to (every time they are reset as Actives with no memories whatsoever) drift toward one another. Apparently becoming a click of sorts. The problem with this, is that it implies there is some latent, residual memory of one another.

This show sounds like it could be great. Something to rival the popularity of Buffy even. However, it will depend on several factors. Chief among those being whether FOX allows the show to evolve and become everything it can be, but also it will depend on how long it takes Joss Whedon to establish the overall plot and get the show in gear. Some detractors have said that the downfall of Firefly was the fact that it took the entire season to establish even a remote concept of the shows overall potential and story which culminated in the film.

Believe it or not, the idea came about while Joss was having lunch with Eliza. They’re buds and they were talking about her career and different things she can look at doing, and during lunch, he goes off to hit the head and comes back with the idea for Dollhouse… Dude, we get creative in the oddest of places.

CAST: Dushku, Amy Acker (Winifred ‘Fred’ Burkle from Angel), Enver Gjokaj, Harry J. Lennix, Tahmoh Penikett (Helo from Battlestar Galactica) and Dichen Lachman.

Writer / producer Tim Minear (Angel, Wonderfalls, Firefly, Drive) joins Joss for this effort.

Dollhouse is slated for January 2009 on Mondays at 8PM, before 24.
